At Peterborough, we use the system for all our Trust based ordering and are currently looking at direct integration into GP systems to replace our locally built email direct ordering (which has been very successful).

This will also involve the role out of the ebooking in ICE to link with our RIS (HSS CRIS) and PACS (Agfa Impax).

Please contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or frustrations on the subject of radiology booking.

Hi Paul,

Your posting is exremely relevant to some of the discussions I am involved in with Trust's. One of the comments which is frequently made is " Choose and Book will be used for GP Radiology requesting..."

Do you have any comments about that sort of statement and has it been a consideration of yours prior to deciding to use the eBooking functionality within ICE?

For your benefit, my view is that C&B is unable to offer the level of detail and flexibility for a Radiology Department making available a catalogue of requests for the GP's.

I would be interested to hear your views...

I agree that it looks a daunting task for most radiology departments to offer C&B. But I think that if ICE has direct bi directional functionality with the RIS booking / diary pages why not?

If there is communication between the requestors and the department then agreed pathways of requesting ARE possible.

If a patient has to attend for an X-ray (plain film) then why not let the requestor book the appointment directly while the patient sits there. If the diary pages are linked and the screen shows the next 5 possible offered appointment slots which could accommodate the examination then the patient could choose. I ask what is the difference between that and the old fashioned way (send form to x-ray, possibly vet, contact patient by phone or post to call the appointments section, then when they call they speak to staff who probably offer the next 5 available slots) ?

It all depends in how much work the department wants to put into the construction and daily management of appointment slots.

For the complex examinations like CT / MRI / US then this will require very strict referral pathways, and future planned and published diary slots. If the patient is offered an appointment within 2 weeks, then this gives the department enough time to send out all relevant preparation for the examination, and if necessary the department could contact the requestor for further information to meet the vetting process. If they request the wrong examination, then I believe this is a training and communication issue.

Therefore I believe that it is possible with thought and planning. After all it’s only moving the functionality from the department to the point of request and making it electronic. It means that the bookings team will have to be trained on diary/slot management.

If any one would like to discuss this issue then I would be more than willing to share their views. After all its only offering a time slot to a patient as a diagnostics provider.

Thanks for the offer Paul.

We will be intorducing the Radiology component in the new Year. We also have HSS CRIS, so might have a few questions for you.

sorry, this may be a bit late to be of any use but we too are using webice / RIS integration and have a pilot GP site requesting radiology - 'all modalities'.

we do not currently offer the facility for them to choose- mearly request, but as a site we have abandoned the idea of Choose and Book for Radiology as the 'Choose' bit does not apply to Diagnostics ( I am reliably informed).

this does mean that a request can be appropriately Vetted and booked and the Updated information returned to webice. Not the booking info but the procedural part.

again, happy to discuss further and expand ideas.

Could I ask all my colleagues within Radiology and Pathology if they could ask any Anglia ICE users to join this User Group? I hope that at your local, regional and national meetings, we should be able to spread the word about this web site.
Within the field of radiology could I ask the following questions to see if Radiology (or even Pathology) user members would like to see the following on this web site.

1. 'How to do' guides that can be downloaded
2. Best practice guides, which have been put in place that may help other new to the system sites.
3. Q & A on configuring the system to how you need to work locally
4. Issues you feel the Chairperson for Radiology and Pathology should raise with Anglia on your behalf
5. What would you like discussed at 'your' Annual meeting.

These are just a few ideas, so why not join this thread and add you ideas?
