I'm interested in knowing how pathology departments that have this system handle add on tests. At mid yorkshire we ask the requestor to do one of the following (we are using ilab Apex v5.6 plus HL7 messaging).

1) If the original form is still on the ward/department, delete the order and start again, making sure that all tests required are selected this time.

2) If the original form has left the department, print out a summary of the original request and hand write the add on tests required.

We ask them to request the extra sample separately as a new and then write on the form that this is an additional test.

thanks

Louise,

That is what users here have started doing. This seems to be what comes naturally to them. One possible disadvantage of this is that disk space may start to get used up as you will have a lot of unfulfilled orders. Can you see this happening?

That was a problem which we have addresses by configuring the lab system to remove all open orders that are older than 6 weeks. This works on the whole but on occassion we have the odd request that have had its order removed accidently. These requests have to be dealt with manually.
